Green spring

Green leaves unfurling
On a gnarled elder tree
Green spring unfurling
Her flag and heraldry

The rain is cold
The wind is strong
And yet the world is turning

With sunlight
And birdsong
And green leaves unfurling

  1. Love it. You’ve made the repetition work very well. Lovely metaphor in the opening verse.

  2. Elder tree – inspired choice; something in my memory says that there’s an old belief that witches turned into elder bushes at the sight of water (or something like that ?)
But a gnarled elder is fairly rare in my experience, they usually don’t survive long enough.
